How to create custom surface patterns in Pro

Skip the search and build the pattern your design needs

Jul 20, 2026

One material decision, no more hunting

You know the pattern you want. Herringbone on the entry floor, a running bond on the feature wall, hexagon tile in the bathroom. Getting there has usually meant scrolling through library variants hoping one matches, importing a custom texture for a single surface, or building the layout by hand.

That is a lot of work for one design choice; you will probably revisit twice more before the render is finished.

The Pattern Editor lets you shape the pattern directly onto the material you already have.

Surface patterns, built into the material workflow

The Pattern Editor lives inside the Standard Material workflow in Lumion Pro 2026.1. Starting from a single compatible base material, you apply a layout preset and adjust it until the surface fits the space.

You can choose from a range of presets:

  • running bonds

  • herringbone

  • chevron

  • basketweave

  • hexagon

  • stack bond

  • traditional brick bonds like English and Flemish.

From there, you refine the tiling, grout, bevel, and color variation. The base texture aligns to the pattern grid automatically, and every change updates live in the viewport.

Shape materials around your design

Working this way is faster, but the bigger gain is control. Because the pattern is generated on the material itself, you’re no longer limited to the layouts baked into a texture. You can test a tighter tile size, rotate the pattern, deepen the grout, or add subtle color variation between tiles, all without leaving Lumion Pro or touching a separate asset.

It also fits the tools you already use. The generated tiles and grout keep responding to your Standard Material settings, so Color, Roughness, Relief, Displacement, and Reflectivity continue to refine the final look while the pattern structure stays intact.

How it works

Getting started is easy:
  1. In Build Mode, open the Material Editor and select the surface you want to work on

  2. Apply a compatible base material. Clean, seamless materials like smooth concrete, marble, wood, terrazzo, or stone work best.

  3. Under the Settings tab, open Extended Properties and enable the Pattern tab.

  4. Pick a preset and adjust the tiling and grout until it looks right.

  5. For the full step-by-step walkthrough, with every control and preset explained in detail, see the support guide: How do you use the Pattern Editor?

Start with clean base materials

For best results, use the Pattern Editor with clean or seamless materials that don’t already contain visible grout lines, tile seams, or a baked-in layout, since otherwise you are layering a pattern on top of an existing one.

If you need a clean base, you can generate seamless PBR materials from your own photos using the Lumion Cloud AI Material Generator and bring them straight into Lumion Pro.

Compare options fast

Not sure whether the space wants chevron or herringbone, wide tiles or narrow? Pair the Pattern Editor with Lumion Pro's Variations feature to compare multiple pattern designs, tile sizes, and grout settings in the same scene, without duplicating the project.

Once you have landed on a look, your pattern and material settings can be copied, saved, and reloaded across future projects, so a good result keeps working for you.
